Launched in December 2025, the Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge is NICMAR's flagship nationwide innovation platform aimed at encouraging Civil Engineering, Architecture and Core Engineering students to develop practical solutions for the country's growing infrastructure and built environment requirements. Supported by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the inaugural edition attracted participation from more than 20,000 students representing over 500 educational institutions across India. After progressing through college-level competitions, city rounds held across 11 cities and three regional finals, the top three teams earned a place in the National Grand Finale.
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari stressed the importance of futuristic research in driving India's development. He said India's young engineering talent possesses the capability to lead future-focused innovation and appreciated NICMAR for creating the Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge as a platform for practical research. He urged students and educational institutions to focus on need-based research capable of reducing construction costs without compromising quality. He also highlighted that technology-driven, cost-effective solutions could reduce import dependency in the infrastructure sector. Referring to the country's expanding infrastructure projects, he said there is significant potential for precast construction and tunnelling technologies in India and suggested that NICMAR develop a precast compound wall design to address emerging infrastructure needs. He congratulated all participating students for their research and valuable contributions.
The National Grand Finale featured regional champion teams from IIT Delhi, Maturi Venkata Subba Rao Engineering College and Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering. Following a comprehensive evaluation by a distinguished jury comprising industry leaders and academic experts, Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering emerged as the winner of the inaugural Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge 2025-26. The victorious team received a Global Infrastructure Excellence Tour along with the overall prize pool worth INR 30 lakh.
Speaking on the occasion, Ajit Gulabchand, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors of the National Institute of Construction Management and Research, said that as India enters one of the most significant phases of infrastructure development, the country's greatest strength will be the quality of its talent alongside capital and technology. He stated that the Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge transforms students from learners into problem solvers by exposing them to real-world infrastructure challenges while encouraging interdisciplinary innovation. He added that NICMAR firmly believes a nation's strength depends on the people who build it.
Alongside the competition, NICMAR organised the Industry-Academia Conclave, bringing together senior industry professionals, academicians and policymakers to deliberate on the future of India's infrastructure ecosystem. The conclave focused on strengthening collaboration between academia and industry, accelerating technology adoption and promoting sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Discussions also highlighted the need to build a future-ready talent pipeline capable of supporting India's infrastructure ambitions and the evolving requirements of the Construction, Real Estate, Infrastructure and Project Management sector.
Ajit Gulabchand further stated that the Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge reflects NICMAR's commitment to strengthening the partnership between academia and industry by creating opportunities for students to engage with real-world challenges and interact directly with industry leaders. He said the initiative is preparing future professionals capable of making meaningful contributions to India's infrastructure and urban development.
With the successful completion of its inaugural edition, the Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge has established itself as a national platform for nurturing innovation, strengthening industry-academia collaboration and empowering the next generation of infrastructure leaders to contribute towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
